Name: Finn | FN-2187
Canon: Star Wars
Age: 23
Canon Point: Post The Force Awakens
History: Finn’s history

Personality:

Finn is, by almost every definition, a hero. To start off with, he’s stupidly brave, almost to the point where you might question that he knows the consequences of his actions. In the beginning of the movie, Finn decides to leave the First Order and make a new life for himself. It’s absurdly risky and would most likely end in his death, but he decides that being free to think and act for himself is more important than anything else. Later on, Finn volunteers to return into the thick of the First Order, Starkiller Base itself, to rescue Rey after she’s been kidnapped. As it turns out, she doesn’t really need too much help getting out on her own, but Finn reveals to Han as time goes on that he has absolutely no clue what he’s doing or how he’s going to get out, only that he’s there for Rey and nothing else. It’s a stupid move that could have ended disastrously, but he manages to swing it to his advantage. We can assume then, too, that Finn is very lucky.

Another heroic trait he has is his loyalty to his friends. Finn struggles with joining the Resistance, not wanting to get into the fight again after spending his whole life on the wrong side of the battle, but he eventually makes the choice to do what’s right. It comes down to his friends. Rey is abducted on Takodana by Kylo Ren, and to Finn, there isn’t really a choice. Rey was one of the first real friends he’s ever had, and he isn’t going to let that go easily. To reiterate what was said earlier, he throws himself into absurdly dangerous circumstances to rescue her without thought for his own welfare. Back at the beginning of the movie too, Finn shows that friendship means a lot to him when he meets the Resistance pilot, Poe Dameron. Though the two do not know each other for long, they develop a bond that lasts beyond just their brief bid for freedom. Finn is clearly distraught when the TIE crashes and he can’t find Poe, believing his first real friend to be dead. He shows this in taking the jacket from the scene, not just for his own benefit, but to keep a bit of Poe with him. Later on, of course, he learns that Poe survived, and is ecstatic to see him again, greeting him gleefully. To Finn, friendship and loyalty is everything, particularly after a life where he was deprived of both.

Finn is also very hard working. While he doesn’t strive for perfection, he does try his very best in everything he does. A lot of that comes from his Stormtrooper background, where he was pushed to be his best. Finn did very well in cadet training and the First Order had high hopes for him before he deserted, which says a lot about his abilities. We can see from his behavior in the movies that he has a lot of confidence in his abilities as well. Many times he charges into situations without a plan, but trusting himself to be able to figure something out. I think again of his attempt to rescue Rey, where he assured General Organa that he could disable the shields. Upon landing on the planet, however, he admitted he had no idea how to do that, but he had confidence he could work it out. This goes for weaponry as well. When handed the lightsaber initially, he had no idea it was a weapon at all. Once he figured it out though, he was surprisingly good, despite having no training and not being Force-sensitive. Finn even managed to wound Kylo Ren, a trained Sith Lord.

This hard work also bleeds into stubbornness, which I could use many of the same examples to prove. Finn doesn’t give up. Once he has an idea in his head, he’s going to pursue it. While this is a trait that would normally be useful to the Order, it ended up being detrimental to them in the case of Finn. His stubbornness would have made him a ruthless commander, but instead, it took a different path. This brings me to my last point: Finn’s goodness. Even after being brainwashed and fed a steady diet of lies about the “corrupt” New Republic, Finn was able to see through that. He was bothered by the First Order’s disapproval of his rescuing a squadmate during a training session, and continued to see small things that disturbed him and that he knew inherently to be wrong. Finn is a good person, to the point where he was able to overcome a merciless training regimen. Instead of ignoring these things, his stubbornness led him to pick at the things that bothered him, until he ended up on Jakku. When he was ordered to kill villagers, Finn refused. He put down his gun and turned away. He knew somehow that it was wrong, despite being told all his life that it was what he was meant to do. His combined stubbornness and goodness led him to say no, to take a stand and to leave, and even to free a prisoner that had killed the same squadmate Finn stuck his neck out for. He knew it was wrong and he knew that the prisoner, Poe, could help him get out of a bad situation.

All in all, Finn has all the traits of a true hero. He’s courageous, loyal, stubborn, and most of all, good. And yet, he has his flaws. He’s human. He gets scared. He trusts too much. I think he’s perfect for this game.

Abilities/Powers:

Finn is a former Stormtrooper, raised from a young age to fight. Stormtroopers go through intensive weapons training, and as such, Finn is an excellent shot and a quick learner. As a cadet, Finn consistently scored very high on all his training exercises and simulations.

Weaknesses:

Despite all of Finn’s extensive training, he does have several glaring weaknesses. The first is not necessarily a weakness, but Finn is very trusting. Having grown up surrounded by allies and living in a team unit, he trusts others to have his back. This could go badly for him if he puts his trust in the wrong person. Secondly, he does occasionally have panic/anxiety attacks. These are rare, only one in the movie and that was caused by seeing a friend die and being ordered to slaughter defenseless villagers. Thirdly, after a lifetime of Imperial propaganda, Finn can be naive to some things and has a skewed understanding of others.

It was a frightening thing, to realize your entire life is a lie.

Eight-Seven can’t breathe. He’s been trying to catch his breath since Slip fell, but he can’t breathe. What is this? What is he doing? He thought the Order was good and noble and liberating the downtrodden, but instead they’re slaughtering villagers, murdering defenseless elders. There was no purpose to it, no explanation or reason. To find Skywalker, first and foremost, but they could have done that without the violence.

This is wrong.

The Order is wrong.

Just the thought makes the stormtrooper cringe internally. He’s had his doubts before, but to denounce the Order, to turn his back completely on an institution that’s governed his life completely since birth...that’s big. It’s terrifying. But this is wrong and now that he realizes that, how can he stay?

He could run.

Again, he shudders at the thought. Run? Leave the only home he’s ever known? It’s mad! He can’t do that!

But he’s a dead man already. A dead man walking. Once Phasma tests his blaster and proves he never fired a shot, he’ll be spaced for cowardice. What other choice does he have?

Okay, so. Say he runs? Where does he go? How does he leave? He’s trapped in space and there’s no way he can get off this ship.

Wait. No. There is a way. An absolutely mad, almost certainly suicidal way.

Eight-Seven takes a deep breath and jams his helmet back on. Well, he’s already doomed anyway. To hell with it all. He’s going to go out fighting.
