History: Finn was inducted into the First Order as a child. He spent most of his life under the name FN-2187 and went through the typical training as a cadet with his squadmates. FN-2003, referred to by the others as 'Slip', was Finn's closest friend.
His first mission was on Jakku. In the initial chaos, Slip was killed, smearing blood onto Finn's helmet. Already distressed, Finn refused to fire on the unarmed villagers when ordered.
This is the pivotal point in Finn's life. He rescued the prisoner, Poe Dameron, who gave him the name 'Finn', and made a desperate bid for freedom. The attempt went sideways when the TIE fighter was shot down and crash landed on Jakku. Believing Poe to be dead, Finn made his way to the closest settlement. The scavenger Rey attacked him when the droid, BB-8, accused Finn of stealing Poe's jacket. Finn told them that Poe was dead, and Rey assumed he was with the Resistance.
The First Order attacked, and the trio escapde in the Millenium Falcon. The ship was boarded by Han Solo and Chewbacca, and after a close call with gangs and space Cthulus, Han agreed to help them get BB-8 to the Resistance. They stopped first on Takodana to speak with Maz. Finn panicked during talk of fighting the Order, telling them that the best course of action is to run. Maz pointed him to some aliens looking for a crewmember, and Finn reluctantly said goodbye to Rey after admitting he was actually a Stormtrooper. He was nearly off-planet when the First Order arrived. In the battle, Finn facds off with an old squadmate, Nines. Rey was abducted by Ren, and the Resistance arrived just a little too late.
Finn joined up with the Resistance to give them information about Starkiller Base, a massive laser planet that has already taken out the planets where the New Republic was based. He met back up with Poe and was overjoyed to see the pilot survived the crash, but immediately asked for his help in rescuing Rey. The Resistance managed to throw together a quick battle plan, and soon Finn, Han, and Chewie were on the planet's surface to disable the shields. They abducted Phasma and ordered her to turn off the shields at gunpoint. Finn then set his sights on finding Rey, only to discover she had already staged her own escape. They met up and decided to set up charges. Finn and Rey watched in horror as Han was killed by Kylo Ren. The two ran to where the Falcon was waiting, but were cut off by Kylo Ren, who called Finn a traitor and challenged him after knocking Rey out. Finn held his own against the Sith, even landing a hit on him before Ren seriously injured him down the spine and on the shoulder.
Personality: Finn is, by almost every definition, a hero. To start off with, he’s stupidly brave, almost to the point where you might question that he knows the consequences of his actions. Another heroic trait he has is his loyalty to his friends. Finn struggles with joining the Resistance, not wanting to get into the fight again after spending his whole life on the wrong side of the battle, but he eventually makes the choice to do what’s right. It comes down to his friends. Rey is abducted on Takodana by Kylo Ren, and to Finn, there isn’t really a choice. Back at the beginning of the movie too, Finn shows that friendship means a lot to him when he meets the Resistance pilot, Poe Dameron. Though the two do not know each other for long, they develop a bond that lasts beyond just their brief bid for freedom.
Even after being brainwashed and fed a steady diet of lies about the “corrupt” New Republic, Finn was able to see through that. He was bothered by the First Order’s disapproval of his rescuing a squadmate during a training session, and continued to see small things that disturbed him and that he knew inherently to be wrong. Finn is a good person, to the point where he was able to overcome a merciless training regimen. Instead of ignoring these things, his stubbornness led him to pick at the things that bothered him, until he ended up on Jakku. When he was ordered to kill villagers, Finn refused. He knew somehow that it was wrong, despite being told all his life that it was what he was meant to do. His combined stubbornness and goodness led him to say no, to take a stand and to leave.
Abilities: Finn is a former Stormtrooper, raised from a young age to fight. The training ranged from weaponry, to sparring, to psychological conditioning (on himself). We can assume then that Finn is adept with most forms of weaponry available in the SW universe and at least a small amount of hand to hand combat.
